UK Cyclist: Long-distance and leisure cycling in the South-west and elsewhere

This popular Cornish randonnée is now in its 23rd edition in its familiar dual format - a 67km route on the tarmac for the roadies, and a 66km parallel off road route for the mountain bikers, which is 90% off-road and has some technical bits. Both trace the now scenic industrial landscape of the Copper Kingdom and the Great Flat Lode.

This is not a race but a touring event. It is a test of fitness and navigational skills through country lanes and quiet roads, but also includes some short stretches of busier roads. A detailed route sheet is provided within the entry fee. There is a medal for successful riders. Proceeds will go to a local charity. The off-road route visits Unity Woods, Wheal Busy, Portreath, Illogan Woods, Tehidy Country Park, the Red River, the Great Flat Lode, the summits of Carn Brea and Carn Marth, Wheal Maid and its tailings dam, Wheal Jane, Billy Bray's Chapel, Twelveheads, the Poldice Valley, before returning to Carharrack. The on-road route includes Wheal Busy, Portreath, North Cliffs, the Great Flat Lode and the picturesque Restronguet Creek.

Notes for the 2018 event

Long-distance cycling under AUK rules is often (though inaccurately) referred to as audaxing. Mudguards are not required for any of these events. Use whatever bike suits you. If you don't want to follow a routesheet then download the GPS file. You will need to be fit and self-sufficient. Most of these events, especially the longer ones, are hard. You should be an experienced cyclist with both fitness and stamina. There is a minimum speed of 15kph for all the events of 200km and above. Don't worry about the maximum speed of 30kph, you won't get near it. Prepare your bike and yourself carefully for any of these events. If you do all the distances, you become an Exeter Wheelers Super Randonneur.
